Foreign Language Center

2002 - 2006
URL: http://flc.osu.edu/

Project Description:

The Ohio State University Foreign Language Center has been the NEALRC's institutional home since the NEALRC's creation in 1993. Awarded a grant by the U.S. Department of Education, the Foreign Language Center (FLC) performs crucial support, collaboration, and leadership roles for the NEALRC whose missions are similar but whose structures and initiatives are complementary.

The FLC was established in 1987 to serve the shared interests of the language departments in the College of Humanities and to establish links on and off campus with individuals and units interested in the languages and cultures of other countries. Its functions include instruction, outreach, publication, distribution of instructional materials, and the promotion of interdisciplinary cooperation in foreign language teaching, and research. The FLC is actively involved in encouraging the integration of technology into foreign language and culture instruction.

The FLC is a regular campus unit in the College of Humanities at OSU and coordinates or directs numerous activities such as foreign language placement testing, teacher training, grant writing, fellowship awards, and program evaluation. The Foreign Language Center also coordinates many research, materials, evaluation, and development projects receiving considerable national attention, including the Collaborative Articulation and Assessment Project (CAAP); MultiCAT: Multimedia Placement Tests for French, German, and Spanish; Foreign Language Program Evaluation; and the Individualized Instruction Learning Center.

The FLC's experienced staff encourages faculty to pursue grant support for innovative and useful research and development projects, offering consultation, proposal-writing assistance, and fiscal and administrative support for many funded projects. The Center has received support from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, the U.S. Department of Education, the National Security Education Program, and private foundations among others.
