The Summit, jointly organized by the Japan-America Society of Central Ohio (JASCO) and the Tokyo-based John Manjiro-Whitfield Commemorative Center for International Exchange (CIE), aims to strengthen the peaceful relationship between the United States and Japan by fostering grassroots friendships through a one-week cultural exchange program for all ages. With over 30 years of history and more than 50,000 Japanese and American participants, the Grassroots Summit is one of the most enduring and important bilateral exchange programs between our countries. The 2023 Summit will showcase Ohio’s local attractions, unique culture and customs, and special business opportunities to nearly 300 Japanese guests and American hosts. Japanese participants will take part in tourist activities in Columbus for three days, including a welcome reception and ceremony at The Ohio Statehouse. They will then travel to eight local host cities across Ohio – Columbus, Dublin, Delaware, Marysville, Bellefontaine, Troy, Sidney, and Findlay – for a 4-day/3-night homestay program. Here, they’ll live with host families and learn more about the local lifestyle and culture before returning to Columbus for a farewell celebration at the Columbus Zoo. Ohio is a keystone in the US-Japan relationship, and the 2023 Grassroots Summit is a special opportunity to show this to the world. Japan is Ohio’s largest foreign investor, with over 400 Japanese companies and 445 Japanese-owned facilities providing more than 66,000 jobs to Ohio citizens (the most in the Midwest).
