North Korea during the Cold War era
Often hailed as the “hermit kingdom,” North Korea has long been regarded as an international pariah and rogue regime. It was a Soviet client state that rapidly rebuilt itself after the Korean War and used brutal social measures to suppress internal dissent. At the same time, North Korea engaged externally with both the Soviet-led socialist bloc as well as interacting with many newly independent countries in the developing world. In this module, we will examine the external and internal dynamics of North Korean history and defeat some common stereotypes of this often misunderstood country.
